IRM Content Delivery Network and Plan
What is a Content Delivery Network?
A Content Delivery Network, or CDN, enables your company to rapidly transmit your website’s data to its users. It also defends your site against harmful security attacks. A combination that enables your website to provide a more stable and reliable user experience.
Essentially, a CDN is a geographically distributed group of servers, which work together to store cache versions of internet content, providing fast delivery to users locally. It enables the high speed transfer of content, such as your web pages, videos and applications, to a large number of users.
Moreover, this network seamlessly incorporates cutting-edge security features, like HTTPS support and field level encryption, to protect your website against cyber threats. These services coexist at edge networking locations that are globally scaled and connected to the network backbone.
Without a CDN, additional milliseconds accumulate when your website loads hundreds of resources, as shown below.
With a CDN, you deliver your website resources via a CDN's edges rather than directly from your website server, like the below image.
What are its benefits?
- Improves your website’s page load speed
- Handles high traffic loads
- Localises coverage without extra server cost
- Provides load balance between multiple servers
- Protects your website from DDoS attacks
- Increases availability of your website
How does it work?
A CDN employs a global network of edge locations and local edge caches to store copies of your website content close to your users. When users request content on your site, like an image or video, the closest edge location fulfils the request. This short distance travelled for user requests enhances your website’s performance and user experience.
This network of content delivery maintains persistent connections with your origin servers for files not cached at the edge locations and the regional edge caches so that such files can be downloaded from the origin servers as swiftly as possible.
